Every family reunion starts with the same problem: how to find a place that will make everyone happy. Usually there are a lot of competing interests and the person that’s planning it all wants to make sure things run smoothly and that everyone has a fun and memorable time.
A Wyoming dude ranch solves the multigenerational problem better than almost any other vacation format. The activities are plentiful and physical. There’s horseback riding, fly fishing, hiking, swimming, games and more, so there’s no age group sitting on the sidelines. The all-inclusive weekly structure naturally creates a shared routine: same meals, same trails, same one of a kind experience.
The Lazy L&B Ranch in Dubois, Wyoming does all of that, and then some. Nestled in the East Fork Valley and surrounded by three mountain ranges, this family-owned guest ranch has been welcoming families for over 40 years. Guests keep coming back, year after year, because once you’ve done it, nothing else quite compares.
Here’s why.
A Setting That Makes the Whole World Feel Far Away
The ranch is 10 miles down a dirt road. That’s not a warning; that’s the whole point 🙂
Once your family arrives at the ranch, the outside world has a hard time keeping up. Cell service is scarce, the days are full, and somewhere around Tuesday nobody is checking their phone anymore. For a family reunion, this matters more than any amenity. When you remove the distractions, you get the conversations. You get the memories. You get the version of your family that you traveled miles and miles to find.
The Lazy L&B sits in the East Fork Valley near Dubois, Wyoming. The ranch is bordered by the Wind River Range, the Absaroka Wilderness, and the Owl Creek Mountains, surrounded by 100,000+ acres of pristine wildlife habitat and Shoshone National Forest. The East Fork River runs through the property and there are opportunities to see all kinds of wildlife including elk, moose, pronghorns, coyotes and wild horses. Zero light pollution means more stars than most people have ever seen.
For those who want to extend the adventure, Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park are both within easy driving distance. A day trip is a possibility but if time allows, add a day or two to explore the parks either before or after your week at the ranch.
Cabins for the Whole Crew
The ranch accommodates up to 35 guests in clean, cozy, rustic cabins. Cabin sizes range from intimate one- or two-person retreats to large family cabins that sleep up to 6. It’s easy to house couples, families, and grandparents all in one place, yet everyone has their own space and privacy at the end of the day.
Each cabin includes a private bath or shower, a small refrigerator, and a porch that’s perfect for morning coffee or a quiet moment before dinner. The main lodge serves as the heart of the ranch: a warm, welcoming space with a bar, fireplace, library, and games table where guests naturally drift together throughout the week.
For a fully private reunion experience there’s the option to book the ranch exclusively for your family. For families who prefer to join other guests and let the ranch’s natural community unfold, that’s available too. Either way, the size of the ranch keeps things intimate and you’ll never feel like a number here.
The Lazy L&B is also a natural fit for milestone celebrations — landmark birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and family gatherings built around a special occasion. There’s something about a week on the ranch that elevates a celebration without requiring any extra effort: a steak cookout under the Wyoming sky, a happy hour beside the river, a horseback ride through mountain country with the people who matter most. If you’re looking for a 50th birthday trip or a 25th anniversary getaway that goes well beyond a dinner reservation, this is it.
Something Real for Every Age, Every Ability
The Lazy L&B’s multigenerational vacation magic comes down to one thing: the week is structured so that every single person, whether it’s your 3-year-old son or your 80-year-old aunt, has something meaningful to do and nobody has to compromise.
Lil’ Cowpokes (Ages 3-5)
Little ones are welcome and well looked after at the Lazy L&B. While the supervised riding program starts at age 6, younger kids can be ponied around the ranch on a horse led by a wrangler. When rides head out, a wrangler stays back to keep young guests entertained with ranch activities: the treehouse, the swing, and the petting zoo, whatever they’re in the mood for that day. Even though they can’t head out on the trail, they can participate in all other kids’ activities and dinners.
The Youngest Riders (Ages 6+)
Kids ride in supervised groups organized by age and ability, giving them a sense of independence and accomplishment from day one. Between rides, they have access to a petting zoo, a treehouse, and the East Fork River running right through the property. Afternoons when there are no rides on the schedule there are other kid specific activities available like the BB gun rifle range, arts and crafts, and leatherwork. Family rides are built into the schedule (Sunday afternoon and Thursday morning) so the whole crew rides together when it counts.
Teens
Teenagers get to ride with their peers, push their limits, join roping clinics, and try the rifle range (ages 12+). They roam the ranch on their own terms. Guest reviews consistently highlight how engaged teens are here. Even kids who arrived skeptical leave asking when they can come back.
Adults
Adults ride daily through terrain that changes with every trail. Fly fishing on the Upper Wind River, hiking, and swimming, round out the days. Most evenings, the whole family eats together, but a couple of nights are reserved for an adult only three-course plated dinner while the kids enjoy a campfire cookout. Both groups tend to think they got the better deal.
Grandparents and Less Active Guests
Rides are matched to ability, not age. The ranch has welcomed complete beginners, nervous first-timers, and guests well into their 80s, on horseback for the first time and the staff makes sure every single one of them feels capable and cared for, not left behind.
Not a rider? Not a problem. Plenty of guests spend their days without ever setting a foot in a stirrup. Read a book on the porch, go fishing, wander the property, or sit by the river. At the Lazy L&B, doing nothing is still doing something. The scenery, the quiet, and the pace of ranch life have a way of being exactly enough.
“We were a large extended family group with children ranging in ages from just under 2 to 17 and everything in between. We truly had the vacation of a lifetime.” -Google Review
The Week Is Already Planned. You Just Show Up.
The hardest part of organizing a family reunion is the planning: meals, activities and itineraries. The Lazy L&B’s all-inclusive weekly format takes that weight off your shoulders entirely. Lodging, all meals, riding, and ranch activities are all included. There are no add-on menus, no activity fees, no decisions to negotiate around. You arrive on Sunday and everything else takes care of itself.
A typical week includes:
- Daily rides through the mountains, with a few all-day rides mid-week with lunch on the trail
- Cowboy breakfast cooked over the fire
- Afternoon clinics and activities throughout the week — fly fishing, arts and crafts, leatherwork, roping, and the rifle range (ages 12+)
- Shared meals, with two evenings reserved for an adults-only dinner while kids enjoy their own fun
- A square dance in Dubois, sunsets, and stargazing
- A celebratory outdoor steak cookout and campfire with cowboy poetry to close the week
Meals are made from scratch by professionally trained chefs and are always fresh, seasonal, and delicious. Special dietary needs are accommodated with advance notice.
For a reunion organizer, this is everything: a full week of programming that you can opt in or out of, community, and memory-making that requires exactly zero management on your part once you arrive.
Time Together. Time Apart. The Balance That Makes It Work.
One of the hidden challenges of multigenerational travel is that not everyone wants to be together every moment, and forcing it isn’t going to make anyone happy. The Lazy L&B’s structure solves this seamlessly.
Most of the time, kids and adults ride in separate groups by age and ability. Adults get long mountain rides without managing little ones and kids get a real, independent adventure. And yet, the family rides, the shared dinners, and the evenings around the fire pull everyone back together.
“The staff do a great job of giving both the kids and adults a great experience by allowing some time together and some time apart.” -TripAdvisor
A Family Running a Ranch for Families
The Lazy L&B is owned and operated by the Halmay family. The ranch is their full-time home, and it shows. Jason, Deb, and their daughters are present and visible throughout the week. It’s clear that this is not just a job for the Halmay family and their crew, but a passion. This is the difference that guests notice most. Not the scenery, not the activities, but the feeling that the people running this place genuinely want your week at the ranch to be the best it can be.
“I have vacationed many places and have never before experienced anything approaching that level of hospitality.” -Top50Ranches Review
The ranch has earned TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence twelve years running, recognition from Top 50 Ranches and World’s Best Ranches, and are members of the Dude Ranchers’ Association. But the reviews that matter most are the ones that say the same thing, over and over: we came as guests and left as family.
What Real Reunion Groups Say
Nothing speaks to a reunion group better than hearing from another one. Here’s what guests have shared about their Lazy L&B experience:
